Glaucoma
Glaucoma is often referred to as the silent thief of sight. It is a family of diseases that cause the
deterioration of the nerve that connects the brain to the eye (the optic nerve). This results in
blindness if allowed to progress to the point where the optic nerve has mostly or completely
deteriorated.
With the most common form of glaucoma, this process typically does not have symptoms until the deterioration of the optic nerve has significantly progressed. Unfortunately, at this point, glaucoma becomes much more difficult to treat.
This is why early detection is the key to successful treatment and management of glaucoma.
Although comprehensive eye exams are crucial for picking up signs that early glaucoma may be present, more sophisticated technology is often required to make the actual diagnosis.
Glaucoma creates localized blind spots in a patient's field of vision. Unfortunately, these blind spots must become quite large before a patient is able to notice them.
At Uptown Eye Boutique, we utilize full threshold visual field analysis to help find these blind spots and diagnose early glaucoma. We use a device called a visual field analyzer to pick up blind spots
that are below the threshold of what our naked eye is capable of perceiving.
We also use optical coherence tomography (OCT) which is an ultrasound device used to provide in-depth analysis of the optic nerve and the retina which are the structures damaged by glaucoma.
Utilizing these technologies, we can provide early diagnosis of glaucoma allowing our patients
to receive prompt treatment.
