Diabetic Eye Exams and Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is a complication from diabetes that causes damage to the retina.
Initial stages of diabetic retinopathy may be asymptomatic but can eventually lead to blindness. The
risk of having diabetic retinopathy increases with the length of time you have had diabetes.
Poor blood sugar control also increases the risk of having diabetic retinopathy.
Patients with diabetes should have comprehensive diabetic eye exams with pupil dilation every year.
In the presence of mild diabetic retinopathy, observation and improvement in blood sugar control
may be all that is required.
At Uptown Eye Boutique, we are able to monitor your diabetic retinal changes with high-definition digital photography and optical coherence tomography (OCT).
OCT is an ultrasound type instrument that allows for detection of microscopic diabetic changes to the retina. In the presence of more severe diabetic retinopathy, referral to a retinal specialist is indicated.
At Uptown Eye Boutique, we work with the most talented and skilled Retinal Specialists in the Metro Atlanta area.
We will always make sure you are well cared for.
